Designer spotlight: Roberto Coin

“Fashion should represent freedom; freedom for the person who wears jewellery and freedom for the person who creates it. Fashion should enhance the personality of everybody; it’s an art, but the art of being different and should increase the ability of today’s women to feel more comfortable in their own role.” — Roberto Coin

With a passion for creating jewellery that is as much about art as it is about fashion, Roberto Coin’s jewellery is loved the world over for it’s timeless elegance and femininity.

The company was founded in 1977 in Vicenza, Italy, a city renowned for it’s jewellery production, particularly gold. The business started life as a manufacturer of other prestigious jewellery brands. It wasn’t until 1996 the Roberto Coin realised his lifelong dream of designing jewellery and turned the company into a brand.

Today, Roberto Coin has established itself as one of the world’s leading Italian jewellers. His fans include Hilary Clinton, Madonna, Charlize Theron. Sarah Jessica Parker and Alicia Keys.

His diverse following reflects the wide appeal of Roberto Coin jewellery. Roberto Coin has always eschewed fads in favour of timeless, elegant designs. His jewellery combines the proud jewellery heritage of Vicenza as well as a desire to innovate. Roberto Coin jewellery was the first brand to reintroduce three coloured gold jewellery in 1978. Coin also patented a production method that has given his jewellery a unique and characteristic silk-like finish.

Since 1996, Roberto Coin has been setting a small ruby in a hidden position in all his jewellery, as both a signature and a little gift to the wearer. Called the King of gems, the ruby is said to bring peace and promote long life.

At the end of last year, Gatwards were pleased to acquire Roberto Coin’s new Fifth Season Brand, which aims to introduce Roberto Coin’s style to a whole new generation. Fifth Season includes the first pieces by Roberto Coin to incorporate silver.

Roberto Coin said of the brand:

"My idea is that jewellery is connected to an attitude rather than an ideal concept.

"The name 'The Fifth Season' appropriately refers to a woman's evolving sense of style, seeing how fashion changes as quickly and as regularly as the seasons, the jewellery line adds to an already outstanding repertoire, allowing every woman to dress for her mood."

The collection embodies all that is best about Roberto Coin – attention to detail, an innovative approach to design, shape, colour and texture – but in a choice of colours and metals to suit your own personal style.
